LEETONIA Village uses grant to buy generator
LEETONIA -- The village will soon have a generator in place to power the police and fire department and village hall communications when storms or other occurrences knock out electrical service.
Village Administrator Gary Phillips said village officials have been working on getting a permanent generator ever since he's been in the area, at least the past 30 years.
The generator has been delivered to the fire department and will be installed by Dickey Electric Supply Inc. of North Lima and Lisbon, he said.
The village used a Homeland Security grant to buy the generator from Generator Specialists Inc. of North Lima for $13,950. The grant also provided $550 for installation costs. The village will pay $5,140 for the installation, he said.
Phillips said the village received the grant through the Columbiana County Emergency Management Agency. He said EMA officials Jay Carter and Mary Smith put a lot of effort into helping the village receive the much-needed grant.
Without the permanent generator, firefighters have to respond to hook up portable generators at the fire and police departments and village hall.
The new generator will kick on automatically when power goes out, causing only a brief interruption of service vital to the communications center for village police and fire departments, Phillips said.
