Morrow, Haystake lead
STRUTHERS -- Ida Morrow and Lloyd Hays rolled 1,312 to take the first-weekend lead of the fourth annual Senior Mixed Doubles Tournament at Bowladrome Lanes.
Joan Davis and Lloyd Hays combined for 1,285 followed by Marge Janosik and Dick Curry (1,246) and Barb Bartoletti/Joe Wilkos (1,236).
The tournament, open to any Youngstown Bowling Association member 55 and older and for women 50-and-over, continues this weekend with squads at 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. For more, call John Bossone at (330) 782-9140.

Rapids, Wizards open with tie
DENVER -- Nat Borchers scored in the second half to rally the Colorado Rapids to a 1-1 tie with the Kansas City Wizards in the opening round of the MLS playoffs Tuesday night.
Borchers' goal came on his first shot of the season.
Wolde Harris, who played for Colorado from 1997-99, scored in the third minute for Kansas City.
The series resumes Saturday in Kansas City, with the winner advancing to the Western Conference finals.
The Wizards charged to an early lead when Kerry Zavagnin found Harris alone along the left sideline. Harris scored from 12 yards, beating Rapids goalkeeper Joe Cannon with a shot just inside the left post.
Four Mariners winGold Gloves
NEW YORK -- Seattle outfielders Ichiro Suzuki and Mike Cameron and Mariners infielders Bret Boone and John Olerud won AL Gold Gloves.
All nine winners had previously earned the honor for fielding excellence. There were seven repeat winners from last season -- New York Yankees pitcher Mike Mussina and Cameron rejoined the list this year.
Texas shortstop Alex Rodriguez, Oakland third baseman Eric Chavez, Minnesota outfielder Torii Hunter and Anaheim catcher Bengie Molina also were chosen.
A-Rod won for the second straight season. Last year, he broke Omar Vizquel's string of nine consecutive Gold Gloves.
Edgar Martinezinks 1-year deal
SEATTLE -- Edgar Martinez, who turns 41 in January, agreed to a $3 million, one-year contract with the Seattle Mariners, a deal that allows him to earn an additional $4 million based on plate appearances.
It's unclear if Martinez's 18th season will be the last for the designated hitter.
The two-time AL batting champion had a $4 million base salary this year and earned $3.5 million in performance bonuses. He faced a Sunday deadline to file for free agency.
Garnett fined
NEW YORK (AP) -- Kevin Garnett of the Minnesota Timberwolves was fined $5,000 by the NBA for throwing a basketball into the stands during a game against the Utah Jazz.
Garnett was ejected in the second quarter of Monday night's loss at Utah after he was called for a second technical foul. After the call by referee Jason Phillips, Garnett threw the ball into the stands while fans cheered the ejection.
Conference USAreplenishes
CHICAGO -- Shortly after losing five schools to the Big East, Conference USA replenished its league by adding Central Florida, Marshall, Rice, SMU and Tulsa.
Central Florida and Marshall will leave the Mid-American Conference, while Rice, SMU and Tulsa depart the Western Athletic Conference.
The schools officially join C-USA on July 1, 2005.
Central Floridasuspends quarterback
ORLANDO, Fla. -- Central Florida quarterback Ryan Schneider was suspended for the rest of the season by coach Mike Kruczek.
Kruczek said Schneider violated team rules that he would not specify.
Schneider ranks third among active NCAA quarterbacks with 82 career touchdown passes, trailing only N.C. State's Philip Rivers (86) and Louisiana Tech's Luke McCown (83). He completed 194 of 281 passes this season for 1,949 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Gretzky namedWorld Cup chief
TORONTO -- Wayne Gretzky will return as executive director for Team Canada at the World Cup of Hockey next September.
Hockey Canada announced the move Tuesday at Gretzky's restaurant, and said the NHL great is bringing back the same management team that helped produce a gold medal at the 2002 Olympics.
Canada won its first Olympic gold in 50 years at Salt Lake City. Gretzky, the managing partner of the Phoenix Coyotes, was in charge of assembling the roster, lining up coaches and directing the management.

Swimmers' sampleswill be retested
LAUSANNE, Switzerland -- Swimming's international governing body will retest samples from this year's world championships for the steroid THG.
FINA said that tests will be carried out on all 312 urine samples collected during the event in July in Barcelona. The decision affects swimming, diving, synchronized swimming and water polo.
