Fiction-writing workshop
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Local author Susan Dexter will hold a fiction-writing workshop from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Jerry Stigliano's Book Source on State Street in Hermitage, Pa. The discussion topic is "Writers' Roadblocks."
Participants may bring up to 10 typewritten pages of their work for Dexter to evaluate after the workshop and are encouraged to bring short selections to share with the group. There is a $10 registration fee. Reservations are suggested because space is limited. They can be made at (724) 981-0777 or at the front counter of the Book Source.
Signing at Dorian Books
YOUNGSTOWN -- Charles Darling, the host of Folk Festival on WYSU-FM, recently released the novel "Galactic End Game," sequel to "Gamma Connection." There will be a book reading, signing and reception at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Dorian Books, 802 Elm St., just north of YSU.
The novel is a science fiction morality play set in the late 21st century. It combines allusions to historical characters and places with comments about environmental, political and social concerns that are relevant to present day in an adventure-based, fast-placed plot.
Darling is an emeritus professor of history at YSU, where he taught undergraduate and graduate courses in American economic, social and cultural history, folk music and the Vietnam War.
Library, Butler Instituteplan family-series event
HOWLAND -- The Howland branch of the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library and the Butler Institute of American Art in Howland will offer the latest installment of their family series "Reading and Other Forms of Art" at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Butler's Trumbull County Branch, 9350 E. Market St.
The interactive program is a unique blend of art and books and encourages adults and children to work together to connect books and art in a museum atmosphere. Staff from the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library Branch Services Department will present stories, and art educators from the Butler will present a companion craft.

WRHS Library scheduleseighth biennal book sale
CLEVELAND -- The Western Reserve Historical Society (WRHS) Library is hosting its eighth biennial book sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 3 p.m. next Sunday. There will be a member's preview Friday. Sunday is half-price day.
The sale will feature a wide range of books made available for sale by friends of the WRHS. Genres include the Civil War, World War II, aviation, biographies, cookbooks, poetry, popular fiction, art and music.
