NHL ROUNDUP Sunday's games
Avalanche 3, Rangers 2, OT
NEW YORK -- Alex Tanguay scored the tying goal in the third period and assisted on Karlis Skrastins' winner 1:14 into overtime. Skrastins' shot struck the right post behind Mike Dunham and then caromed off the goalie's skate and in to win it. Tanguay, who extended his NHL-best point streak to nine games, tied it with 9:06 remaining in regulation, picking up a rebound of Milan Hejduk's wraparound try and banking a shot in off Dunham's left arm. Travis Brigley scored his first NHL goal during a third-period power play for the Avalanche. David Aebischer stopped 22 shots. Bobby Holik and Mark Messier scored for New York. Dunham made 35 saves in his eighth straight start.
Maple Leafs 2, Hurricanes 1
RALEIGH, N.C. -- Mats Sundin scored 1:05 in, and rookie Mikael Tellqvist stopped 24 shots, helping Toronto snap a three-game losing streak. Toronto wasted little time rebounding from its embarrassing 7-1 home loss to Philadelphia on Saturday, jumping on the Hurricanes for two early goals. Ken Klee, who assisted on Sundin's goal, scored 12 seconds into a two-man advantage for a 2-0 lead. Ron Francis scored with 9:33 remaining for the Hurricanes, who lost their third straight. Carolina has just two wins in its first 11 games.
Sharks 2, Thrashers 2
ATLANTA -- Marco Sturm scored off a scramble with less than three minutes remaining to rally San Jose. The tying goal came after Atlanta goalie Pasi Nurminen tried to trap the puck against his chest, but Sturm swooped in and scored his third of the season. Jeff Cowan scored at 2:30 of the second period, and Slava Kozlov added a goal with five minutes left for the Thrashers. Scott Hannan opened the scoring for the Sharks at 13:21 of the first period. The Thrashers' Marc Savard left midway through the second period with a sprained left ankle. X-rays were negative, and Savard, who ranks second on the team with 14 points, was to be re-evaluated today.
Blackhawks 3, Mighty Ducks 1
CHICAGO -- Steve Sullivan and Kyle Calder scored power-play goals and Scott Nichol added another score for Chicago, which improved to 4-1-3 in its last eight games. Chicago rookie Michael Leighton stopped 29 shots for his first win of the season. He lost his shutout when Vaclav Prospal scored 6:02 into the third period. Anaheim's Jean-Sebastien Giguere made his first start in five games, finishing with 22 saves. His record slipped to 1-6-0.
Stars 7, Predators 3
DALLAS -- Bill Guerin earned his second hat trick in three games, and the fifth of his career, to lead the Dallas. Brenden Morrow, Niko Kapanen, Mike Modano and Jason Arnott each added a goal and an assist for the Stars. Sergei Zubov added three assists, and goalie Marty Turco made 21 saves. Guerin, who also had an assist, has nine goals this season, second only to Atlanta's Ilya Kovalchuk, who has 11. Kimmo Timonen and Scott Walker scored power-play goals for Nashville. Rookie defenseman Marek Zidlicky also scored. Nashville starting goalie Tomas Vokoun gave up six goals on 22 shots, before being pulled 5:29 into the third period.
