Hanoverton acts on sewer project

HANOVERTON -- Village council authorized the mayor to seek a grant for design work for the sewer project proposed for the village and the unincorporated area of Kensington.
Both entities are under orders from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency to abate Sandy Beaver Creek pollution caused by failing septic systems.
The village has been working with Columbiana County commissioners, who are responsible for the Kensington area cleanup.
According to Mayor Dan Kibler, county engineer Bert Dawson suggested the village apply for a State Issue 2 grant from the Ohio Public Works Commission to defray the cost of the design study.
The study, done by MS Consultants of Youngstown, cost $206,272, and the grant, if awarded, would pick up 90 percent of that, amounting to $185,644, Kibler said.
The remaining cost would be split between the village and county, with each paying $10,314, Kibler said.
Council voted 5-0 Monday night to authorize the mayor to apply for the grant and to team up with the county on the sewer project. Councilman Mark Grate was not present.
In other matters, Kibler told council that a local business, the Silver Dollar, was under new ownership and renovations are under way for a restaurant. Kibler said the new owners, Mark and Veronica Berresford and Jim and Peggy Ewing, plan to have the new eatery open by Thanksgiving.
