WARREN -- Northeast Ohio Adoption Services will have open house for prospective adoptive parents from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at its offices at 5000 E. Market St., Suite 26, in recognition of National Adoption Awareness Month.
Specialists will be available to give out information packets and answer questions.
People who adopt can be married or single, have no other children or already have children or grandchildren.
There also is no upper age limit and various income levels also may adopt.
NOAS does not charge adoption fees.
Groups take donationsfor veterans, families
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Nonperishable food items and financial contributions are being collected for needy veterans and their families for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
The Lawrence County Veterans Affairs Office and Bishop Kenneth Kauffman of Community Outreach will be taking the donations through Nov. 20.
Food donations can be taken to the main entrance of the county government center from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday through Nov. 20.
Financial donations should be made payable to Community Outreach, 4133 Ellwood Road, New Castle, Pa. 16101.
All financial donations are tax deductible.
Grants normally used to defray the cost have been drastically reduced this year, and more donations are needed.
Volunteers needed
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The New Castle City Rescue Mission is inviting schools, churches and organizations to assist in helping to provide Thanksgiving food baskets to needy families in Beaver, Butler, Lawrence and Mercer counties. Volunteers are needed for assembly of baskets, taking applications and distributing baskets Nov. 25. Applications are being taken from 9 to11 a.m. and 1 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.

Checking child seats
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The Pennsylvania State Police in Lawrence County will conduct a child safety seat check from noon to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the station on Pa. Route 18. People are asked to bring the vehicle owner's manual, child car seat and instructions, towels and the child. Call (724) 598-2211 for an appointment.
