SOCCER ROUNDUP | MLS playoffs
Revolution 2, MetroStars 0
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Rookie Pat Noonan and Dario Fabbro each scored a goal to lead New England. Under the league's new playoff format, the two-game series switches to Foxboro, Mass., for a second game next Sunday. The team with the most goals in the two games advances to the Eastern Conference finals. Noonan has scored eight goals in five games against the MetroStars this season, the most any Revolution player has ever scored against one club. The Revolution scored their first goal in the 17th minute when Fabbro, positioned about 7 yards in front of the goal, redirected a shot by Jay heaps past MetroStars goalkeeper Jonny Walker.
Fire 2, United 0
WASHINGTON -- Andy Williams and Ante Razov each scored a goal to help Chicago spoil D.C. United's return to the MLS playoffs. United, which was 12-0 at home in the playoffs coming into the game, hadn't played in the postseason since beating the L.A. Galaxy for their third MLS Cup title in 1999. Williams, who scored just twice in 20 regular-season games, scored on the game's first shot by tucking a low drive inside the far post from nearly 30 yards. D.C.'s Ronald Cerritos appeared to tie the game in the 13th minute, but was whistled for being offsides. From that point, the game became as much about composure as it was about skill.
