MINNEAPOLIS -- Kevin Garnett had 20 points and seven rebounds, and Latrell Sprewell's defense helped the Minnesota Timberwolves hold Toronto to a franchise- low for points in a victory. Michael Olowokandi had 14 points and Sam Cassell added 13 for Minnesota, which scored a franchise-low 61 points the previous night at New Jersey. Toronto's 56 points was the lowest total ever against the Wolves.
Nets 98, Wizards 85
WASHINGTON -- Jason Kidd had 30 points and nine assists to lead the New Jersey Nets past a raw and younger image of themselves coached by their former assistant coach, Eddie Jordan. Richard Jefferson added 19 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists for the Nets, who never trailed. Brian Scalabrine, starting for injured forward Kenyon Martin, had 12 points, including the first three in a 9-2 run that opened the fourth quarter and restored New Jersey's double-digit lead.
Pistons 96, Magic 85
ORLANDO, Fla. -- Richard Hamilton scored 10 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter,backcourt partner Chauncey Billups added 17 and Chucky Atkins, Detroit's third guard, had 14 points. Ben Wallace had 13 points and 17 rebounds for his second double-double of the season, leading the Pistons to a 50-33 rebounding advantage. It was the first meeting between the teams since the opening round of last season's playoffs.
Pacers 103, Hawks 99, OT
ATLANTA -- Anthony Johnson hit a tie-breaking 3-pointer in overtime, then sealed the victory by taking an elbow to the face from Jason Terry. Ron Artest led the Pacers with 22 points, and Al Harrington scored 20 points as Indiana's reserves outscored their Atlanta counterparts 38-8. That didn't even include Fred Jones, who scored 15 points as a fill-in starter for Reggie Miller (sore back).
Spurs 86, Knicks 74
SAN ANTONIO -- Jason Hart and Shane Heal handled the point guard duties in their season debuts, and San Antonio got 15 points and 15 rebounds from Tim Duncan. With Tony Parker (sore left ankle) and Anthony Carter (left patella tendinitis) sidelined, the Spurs gave the start to Hart -- signed Friday after being cut by Seattle. He had two points and two assists in 31 minutes. Heal, an Australian who played briefly in the NBA for Minnesota, had 11 points.
Hornets 97, Celtics 90
NEW ORLEANS -- Baron Davis made six 3-pointers and scored 37 points to give the Hornets the first 3-0 start in franchise history. Davis was 6-for-7 from 3-point range, his last coming with 4:26 left and giving the Hornets a 91-87 lead. The Hornets hit 12-pointers in all. Paul Pierce led the Celtics with 25, while Raef LaFrentz scored 17 coming off the bench. Vin Baker could not sustain a strong start and finished with only eight points.
Mavericks 127, Jazz 102
DALLAS -- Newcomers Antoine Walker and Tony Delk began looking comfortable in the Dallas offense, each sinking a pair of 3-pointers during an exciting third-quarter stretch. Delk scored 14 of his 22 in the third period while Walker had 10 of his 16. The Mavericks scored 41 points, two shy of the biggest third quarter in team history. Fellow recent addition Antawn Jamison overcame an 0-for-6 start to finish with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Bucks 98, Bulls 68
MILWAUKEE -- Newcomer Joe Smith helped make coach Terry Porter's home debut a winning one, scoring 19 points in Milwaukee's rout of Chicago. Smith scored 12 points in the third quarter as the Bucks turned a tight game into a blowout. He scored eight straight points during a 24-3 run that turned a 48-47 deficit into a 71-51 lead. The Bulls never recovered and finished with one of the worst halves in their history, scoring just 26 points.
Grizzlies 79, Rockets 71
HOUSTON -- Lorenzen Wright came off the bench to score 21 points, including 10 straight in the fourth quarter. With Memphis trailing 61-60 and 7:39 left, Wright scored 11 points during a 13-2 run. Houston pulled within four, 75-71, on a basket by Yao Ming with 51 seconds left, but never got closer as the Grizzlies scored the last four points. Pau Gasol contributed 12 points and Stromile Swift 10.
Nuggets 109, Kings 88
DENVER -- Carmelo Anthony had 23 points, six rebounds and five assists in his best showing of a young season, leading the Denver Nuggets to a win over the Sacramento Kings. Voshon Lenard had 15 points, and Chris Andersen and Rodney White came off the bench to score 12 apiece for the Nuggets, who placed seven players in double figures. Marcus Camby had 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Lakers 103, Suns 99
PHOENIX -- Kobe Bryant returned to a mix of boos and cheers and scored 15 points -- including three free throws in the final 66 seconds -- to help the All-Star lineup of the Los Angeles Lakers hold on to defeat the Phoenix Suns. Bryant missed a free throw with 10.9 seconds to go and the Lakers leading 102-99, giving the Suns a chance to tie it. But Amare Stoudemire, not known for his outside shooting, missed a 3-pointer from the top of the key.
