GOLF Goosen fires 67, leads by 2 shots in Chrysler
Retief Goosen is being chased by Briny Baird and Vijay Singh.
PALM HARBOR, Fla. (AP) -- Whether he missed his target by 30 yards or holed a birdie putt from 60 feet across the green, Retief Goosen looked as unflappable as ever Saturday in the Chrysler Championship.
Only after he finished his 4-under 67 -- the only guy at Innisbrook with three rounds in the 60s -- and looked at his two-stroke lead on the large leader board behind the 18th green did he sound nervous.
Briny Baird had a 66 and was in second place.
What got Goosen's attention was the guy who was another stroke back -- Vijay Singh, a name that has become a familiar sight near the top of any leader board.
"It's going to be a tough day," Goosen said. "Vijay, I know, is playing well. The whole year he has been playing really well. He's probably the man to try to beat tomorrow."
Tough guy to catch
Those were unusual words from Goosen, the former U.S. Open champion who is one of the toughest guys to catch on Sunday.
Then again, he has reason to be alarmed.
Singh, who has won twice and finished no worse than a tie for sixth since the second week of August, matched the best score of the tournament -- a 6-under 65 -- and has the extra incentive of trying to wrap up the PGA Tour money title with a victory.
If not, Tiger Woods can still win the Tour Championship next week and have a chance to win the money title for a record fifth straight year.
"If I do, I do. If I don't, I don't," Singh shrugged. "I've still got a chance next week. He still has to beat me next week to pass me."
Goosen was at 11-under 202 on the Copperhead course at Innisbrook.
LPGA
JEJU ISLAND, South Korea (AP) -- Teenager Shi-hyun Ahn led by three strokes halfway through the CJ Nine Bridges Classic on Saturday after shooting a 1-under-par 71 in the LPGA tournament.
Defending champion Se Ri Pak, Grace Park, Catriona Matthew and Laura Davies shared second place.
Ahn, a 19-year-old South Korean, birdied the par-4 14th hole after making nine consecutive pars. She finished the second round at 8-under 136, a day after tying Pak's course record on the resort island with a 65.
