BOARDMAN -- A goal by Matt Lombardo with 3:54 remaining lifted the Youngstown Phantoms to a 2-1 victory over the previously unbeaten Soo Indians Saturday at The Ice Zone.
Soo, the first-place team in the North American Hockey League's North Division was 13-0-5 and riding a six-game winning streak. Youngstown snapped its two-game losing streak thanks to goaltender Tyler Sims who stopped 38 shots.
"I've said time and time again a goaltender can make a coach look like a genius, and that's what happened tonight," Youngstown (9-3-4, 22 points) coach Bob Mainhardt said. "Tyler Sims was outstanding. He faced great pressure all night and he was up to the challenge."
The Soo out-shot the Phantoms 15-6 in the opening period, but Sims kept the Indians off the scoreboard until Jim Jorgensen beat him with a wrist shot straight on with 1:12 remaining in the period.
In the second period, the Phantoms scored late as Anthony Canzoneri found the net with 1:16 left. Canzoneri beat Soo goaltender Adam Dekker on the glove side after gathering in a cross-ice pass from Greg Brown.
Lombardo beat Dekker on a backhander for the game-winning goal, which was set up by an assist from Tommy Kolar. The Soo out-shot the Phantoms, 39-21, on the night.
