Penguins win in OT, but Lemieux injured
Ryan Malone scored the winning goal after Mario Lemieux was shelved early.
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Rookie Ryan Malone scored at 2 minutes, 10 seconds of overtime, and Pittsburgh beat Boston 3-2 Saturday despite Mario Lemieux's early injury, snapping the Bruins' six-game road winning streak.
The Penguins played without Lemieux for the final 42 minutes. He left the game with a hip injury, and it was unclear whether he would be available when the Penguins play Toronto Tuesday.
In overtime, Bruins defenseman Dan McGillis blocked Drake Berehowsky's shot from the right point with his right skate, but Malone cruised into the high slot for the rebound, firing a 25-foot slap shot that got past goaltender Andrew Raycroft.
Malone's second goal of the season came on the only shot of overtime.
Overcome deficit
The Penguins overcame a 2-0 third-period deficit with the help of goals 4:48 apart by Rico Fata. Fata's second goal -- his fifth of the season -- came with just under eight minutes to play.
Mike Knuble scored his sixth goal in the first period, and P.J. Axelsson scored in the second period for the Bruins, who were out-shot 23-18 after the first period.
Fata tied the game by converting the rebound of a Dick Tarnstrom slap shot at 12:03 of the third period for his first power-play goal of the season. Pittsburgh's power play, 1-for-18 over the previous four games, got the chance when Boston's Joe Thornton was penalized for roughing Dan Focht behind the play.
Fata cut the Bruins' lead in half at 7:15 of the third period when he redirected Mike Eastwood's pass off the right post and into the net.
Bruins take lead
The Bruins took the early lead on Knuble's sixth goal of the season at 2:53 of the first period. Eastwood pulled down Thornton in the Pittsburgh zone, causing him to lose the puck, but Knuble found it in the right circle and fired a quick wrist shot past Penguins' goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury.
Axelsson made it 2-0 at 9:34 of the second period after some good defensive work by Brian Rolston. Rolston was back-checking when he stole the puck from Brian Holzinger, then fed a pass to a streaking Axelsson on the right wing for his second goal of the season.
