YOUNGSTOWN -- A South Side woman was in stable condition Saturday afternoon in St. Elizabeth Health Center after an electrical fire did about $2,000 damage to her home at 844 Palmer Ave. All six residents were home and got out safely. But one resident, Janice Allen, who has asthma and encountered breathing difficulties, was taken from the scene by ambulance, Fire Capt. Ron Myers said. A fan ignited a chair about 7 p.m. Friday in an upstairs bedroom of the home; the fire was confined to that bedroom, he said.
Contract talks to resume
NILES -- The union representing classified employees in the Niles School District said contract talks will resume with the board of education Wednesday.
Ohio Association of Public School Employees Local 365 represents about 120 workers who have been without a contract since summer.
The union said an overwhelming number of its members recently voted to authorize a strike action.
The union said federal mediation is involved in major issues of staffing levels, length of contract, pay and benefits.
Rate increases, flooding
WARREN -- City sewage department director Tom Angelo will talk about rate increases and recent flooding at a 7th Ward meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Secrest Elementary School.
Christmas sale donations
WARREN -- The Harriet Taylor Upton Association is accepting donations of unwanted decorations for its Christmas sale, which runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 14 and 15.
The sale at the Monroe Avenue Upton House will include used Christmas decorations that are either antiques, collectibles or other desirables.
People who no longer need their Christmas season possessions and don't know what to do with them can drop them off at the Upton House from 1 to 5 p.m. Nov. 11 and 13 or from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 12. Items can also be picked up.
All proceeds from the sale will be used for association projects.
Fellowship Food Pantry
STRUTHERS -- Fellowship Food Pantry, 115 Frank St., is asking for donations to provide needy families with a turkey and a bag of groceries for Christmas.
