The Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull Counties United Auto Workers Community Action Program Council is endorsing Trumbull County Commissioner Michael J. O'Brien for Warren mayor in Tuesday's election. The council represents active and retired members of UAW Locals 1112, 1714, 2901 and 4199.
Lawsuit seeks records
YOUNGSTOWN -- Andrea R. Wood, the publisher of The Business Journal, has filed a lawsuit seeking to force city officials to produce public records concerning the proposed Civic Center.
Wood filed the lawsuit Friday in Mahoning County Common Please Court against Mayor George M. McKelvey and Law Director John A. McNally IV.
The complaint says the two officials are the custodians of records relating to the proposed $26 million project.
Copies of letters from McNally included in the lawsuit show the city has made copies of a number of documents on the center for the publication since February.
But the lawsuit says the officials and other workers have failed to produce all the documents. It asks for a variety of records, both recent and as far back as a 1985 environmental cleanup at the proposed site.
McNally could not be reached to comment. McKelvey said he does not keep the records but that they are open to the public.
Flu shots available
LORDSTOWN -- United Autoworkers Union Locals 1112 and 1714 will offer flu shots from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Local 1112 Hall, 11471 Reuther Drive S.W., off state Route 45 just north of North Jackson. The cost is $10 per shot for Local 1112 and 1714 members, and $11 per shot for other adults and for children over age 7. In conjunction with the flu shot program, a health fair will be at the union hall from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
School panel appointed
BRISTOLVILLE -- A state financial oversight commission for the Bristol Local School District has been appointed and will hold its first public meeting at 1 p.m. Friday in the middle school conference room, according to the Ohio Department of Education.
The commission members are: William Wenger, an ODE consultant, who will be commission chairman; Elisabeth Gorenstein, a budget analyst with the Ohio Office of Budget and Management; Dennis A. Beach, a certified public accountant from Trumbull County; Dr. Douglas L. Burchett, a parent in the district; and a local business person still to be appointed by Gov. Bob Taft.
The commission will work with the school district to develop a financial recovery plan to get the district out of fiscal emergency. On Oct. 14, the district was declared to be in fiscal emergency by State Auditor Betty Montgomery after she certified a projected $785,000 general fund deficit by the end of June 2004.
Walk to explain levy
SEBRING -- Sebring Schools Superintendent Howard Friend will be pounding the village pavement Monday to tout the district's operating levy.
Friend will walk from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. beginning at the corner of 12th Street and Wisconsin and will move south through town. He will address residents of Copeland Oaks retirement community at 2 p.m.
Friend said his walk will people the chance to ask questions about the levy.
The tax issue is a 6.8-mill emergency levy, the same levy voters defeated in May by 120 votes, Friend said.
He said the levy will generate $305,000 per year. The district is expected to be in a deficit in July, he said.
