Warren ward meeting
WARREN -- Councilman Alford L. Novak, D-2nd, will conduct a ward meeting at 5 p.m. Sunday at Packard Park Shelter House.
Tom Angelo, director of water pollution control, is expected to attend to discuss flooding in the 2nd Ward and future sewer projects that will affect the ward. He's also expected to talk about the city's back-flow prevention program and answer residents' questions.
Novak said flooding problems not previously reported will be documented.
'Cinderella' tickets
HUBBARD -- Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 85, representing Hubbard Township police, is selling tickets for the stage play "Cinderella." The performance will be at 8 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Packard Music Hall in Warren.
Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the police department, 2600 Elmwood Drive Ext. Proceeds from the fund-raising event will be used to support community events.
Boat tour at park
PORTERSVILLE, Pa. -- Nautical Nature, the Moraine State Park boat tour, will offer trips this weekend around Lake Arthur. Trips are at noon, 1:30 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4:15 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at McDanel's Launch on the park's north shore. Cost is $5.25 for adults, $2.50 for children and $15 for a family of five. Reservations are recommended. Call (724) 368-9185 and leave a message. All proceeds benefit the Moraine Preservation Funds education program and barn owl replenishment.
Voted off 'Superstar'
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Asia Ross, the Thiel College coed selected as one of eight finalists in the NBC "Today" show's "Today's Superstar" competition, saw her bid come to an end this morning.
Ross, who turned 19 today, was the first of the singers eliminated based on online voting by viewers of the show.
Ross, a pre-law major from Cuyahoga Falls, learned she was eliminated live on the television show in New York City.
Despite the loss, she told the show's hosts that she had an amazing time during her brief stay in New York.
Ross learned Oct. 20 that she had been selected from among 6,000 applicants for the competition.
Education seminars
FARRELL, Pa. -- Northwestern Legal Services and AWARE (Alternatives for Women Advocacy Resources and Education) will offer a session on finances/drug and alcohol issues from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at its office, 1031 Roemer Blvd., as part of AWARE's education seminars. Storage building theft
YOUNGSTOWN -- Someone broke into the West End Girls Softball League main storage building at the field on North Hazelwood Avenue and stole a coffee pot, weed cutter, two shovels and two rakes, reports show.
The break-in was discovered Wednesday afternoon.
It appears someone used a vehicle to push in the metal door and frame of the building to gain entry, police said.
14-year-old starts fire
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 14-year-old East Philadelphia Avenue boy admitted to police he started a fire at his home Wednesday afternoon and was taken to the juvenile justice center to face a charge of aggravated arson, reports show.
The fire rekindled at 1:30 a.m. today, and a firefighter was treated at a local hospital for smoke inhalation, said fire Lt. Kevin Johnson.
The boy told police he set fire to paper and threw it out a window but the paper blew back inside and ignited an upstairs bedroom.
The occupants told firefighters they would stay with relatives until repairs are made. Damage was estimated at $40,000.
Cocaine found in raid
YOUNGSTOWN -- Twenty-three packaged-for-sale bags of crack cocaine were found in a bowl during a vice squad raid at 116 Seneca Avenue Wednesday afternoon, police said.
The resident, Frederick Dawson, 33, was arrested on a charge of trafficking in crack and possession of drug paraphernalia (scale).
Police said Dawson told them the crack found in his kitchen was for personal use and not for sale.
