National Award winner
YOUNGSTOWN -- Aulanna Armour, an honor roll student at The Rayen School, was recently named a United States National Award winner by the U.S. Achievement Academy, based on academic performance. She is the daughter of Ezell and Brenda Armour.
Principals scholarship
SOUTHINGTON -- Heather Lynn, a Chalker High School senior, has been nominated to compete in the national Principal's Leadership Award scholarship program sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Criteria are leadership, service, achievement in the arts and sciences, and academics. Heather now will compete nationally for one of 150 $1,000 college scholarships.

YSU to present Law Day
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State University will host a Law Day with an Ohio Law Caravan visit from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday in the Ohio Room of Kilcawley Center on campus. The program, sponsored by YSU's department of political science, will feature admissions representatives from 22 law schools with information about programs, catalogs, financial aid and applications. Scholarly communications
KENT -- Dr. David Shulenburger, University of Kansas provost and executive vice chancellor, is to give a lecture titled "New Directions in Scholarly Communication" at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in Room 306 at the Student Center. Accelerated degree
CANFIELD -- Informational meetings on the Malone College accelerated degree completion program in management will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday and Nov. 20 at the college's Continuing Studies Center in the Westford Professional Centre, 4137 Boardman-Canfield Road. Malone wellness center
CANTON -- Groundbreaking was earlier this month at Malone College to begin construction of a $1,650,000 Wellness Center. It represents the eighth new construction project on campus in just over a decade. Of the total cost, $1 million has been secured through a federal line-item appropriation. The 10,200-square-foot Wellness Center will be a two-floor addition to Osborne Hall, a current structure that houses the gymnasium, athletic offices, and classrooms. The center will have an aerobic exercise and weight room, equipment, and laboratories to support programs for health and human performance majors.
SRU facilities award
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- The Slippery Rock University facilities and planning operation earned an Effective and Innovative Practices Award and $4,000 from the Association of Higher Education Facilities Officers and appeared in the organization's September-October issue of Facilities Manager magazine. SRU was highlighted for its Stockless Custodial Supply Chain plan that relies on a single vendor to provide supplies for the entire campus. The plan has standardized products, reduced expenditures by $13,000, reduced paperwork, and opened up 1,500 square feet of warehouse space. It covers such items as mops, buckets, brooms, cleaners, paper towels, gloves, soap and trash-can liners.

Poetry contest deadline
Creative Communication sponsors a free Poetry Contest for Ohio pupils and adults, offering more than $2,500 in poet prizes, $500 in school grants and a chance for publication in an anthology. Winners will be selected in five categories. Each poet may submit one original poem, 21 lines or less. Deadline is Dec. 5. Appointed to CPA board
YOUNGSTOWN -- Peter D. Woodlock, chairman of the accounting and finance department at Youngstown State University, is a new member of the Ohio Society of Certified Public Accountants executive board. Woodlock became a CPA in 1981 and joined the society in 1993. He is a past editor of the Ohio CPA Journal and currently is chairman of the Catalyst editorial advisory board. Woodlock also served as adviser to students in the Mahoning Valley chapter of the society, is president-elect of the Burdman Group and is a long-standing member of the St. Elizabeth/HMHP finance and audit committee.
Kiwanis official installed
ALLIANCE -- Dr. James Perone, an associate professor of music at Mount Union College, was recently installed as lieutenant governor of Division 17 of the Ohio District of Kiwanis International. He will be responsible for assisting 12 Kiwanis clubs in Mahoning, Columbiana, Stark and Tuscarawas counties during the 2003-2004 administrative year.
Leader of doctors group
ROOTSTOWN -- Dr. Lois Margaret Nora, president and dean of the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine, was recently named president of the American Association of Electrodiagnostic Medicine. The group of about 5,000 physicians is dedicated to the scientifically based advancement of the diagnosis and treatment of muscle and nerve disorders.
