Explaining income credit
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Area Community Action Council is organizing a campaign to make Mahoning County residents aware of the federal earned income credit.
The agency says the credit -- given to people who earn low to moderate incomes -- is going largely ignored by county residents.
The organization says more than $79 million in earned income credits were available to county residents in 2001, but only 23 percent of those eligible claimed the credit.
The organization is partnering with other agencies to better educate county residents about the credit.
Among the efforts is training sessions for volunteer tax preparers to educate them on the credit.
The IRS will provide education materials explaining the credit.
