Goodwill, a member agency of the Youngstown/Mahoning Valley United Way, provides employment, job training and other services to people with disabilities and special needs. About $163,000 of its 2002 $5.3 million budget was provided by United Way.
The Youngstown/Mahoning Valley United Way 2003 financial campaign is under way. Its goal is $3.2 million.
Among the services that United Way helps support are the Youngstown Radio Reading Service for the print handicapped; sheltered employment for clients not capable of competitive employment; job placement; and the staff nurse, who is the medical and safety director.
Other services provided by Goodwill under its vocational program:
Vocational evaluation, work adjustment and skill training, community work adjustment, job search techniques, sheltered employment, placement, travel training and job coaching.
Goodwill's community outreach programs include:
Amblyopia screening for 4-year-olds in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties -- 2,129 in 2002.
Social services for the visually impaired, such as advocacy and intervention, referral and support for clients and employees -- 1,348 in 2002.
Youngstown Radio Reading Service -- 1,077 in 2002.
