EAST PALESTINE School sets turkey trot

EAST PALESTINE -- East Palestine Middle School pupils hope lots of adults will do laps around the stadium for a worthy cause.
Middle school EXCEL, gifted and talented pupils are seeking community support to raise money for the area's needy families during the holidays. The pupils are sponsoring a turkey trot from 1:45 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the high school track.
Donations of $6 per person are needed, and adults and pupils can walk four laps around the track that day or just make a donation by check to the East Palestine Schools.
The pupils are members of the middle school's Community Problem Solving Team out to find a solution to families not having money for Thanksgiving or Christmas dinners.
Jean Metzger, the EXCEL program adviser, said local businesses have donated prizes that will be awarded in drawings at the end of the event.
All turkey trot participants will be eligible for gift certificates from Subway, Dairy Queen, Cinemark Movies 8 in Boardman and Toys "R" Us. The certificate for Toys "R" Us is for the "Star Wars" video collection, she noted.
Metzger said the pupils need a lot of support for the community because their goal is to raise enough money to provide $20 food gift certificates to 150 families. Any money left will be used to buy turkeys for Christmas.
