BOARDMAN -- Township voters will be asked to consider eight additional liquor permits for six businesses across the township.
Boardman is typically considered a dry community, but individual site-specific permits can be issued if approved by residents in a given precinct.
There are 52 liquor permits throughout the township's 52 precincts. Some township officials have said the growth of the community's commercial district means more businesses will seek liquor permits.
The Marc's store on Tiffany Boulevard is requesting permits to sale beer, wine and mixed beverages daily and Sunday from voters in the 51st precinct. Foodmart on Market Street is also asking for permits to sale beer wine and mixed beverages daily and Sunday from voters in the 21st precinct.
Truck World on Western Reserve Road is asking voters in the 46th precinct for permission to have on-premises and carryout beer sales. Spinners on Boardman-Canfield Road is requesting a permit for beer, mixed beverages and intoxicating liquor from the voters of the 35th precinct.
The Ice Zone Inc. on McClurg Road, also in the 46th precinct, is also on the ballot for a second time asking voters to allow the sale of beer, wine, mixed drinks and liquor. Bill Wimer, vice-president of the Youngstown Phantoms hockey team, said the business intends to sell beer only during games and special events.
The team's home is the Ice Zone.
"Hockey is a pretty big beer sport and most of the other teams do have beer at their facility," he said. "We have no desire to open a bar or offer beer at any other time."
Voters rejected a request from the Ice Zone in 2002, but Wimer said the company has reached out more to the community with mailings and phone calls in an effort to explain what a permit at the business will mean. Voters were invited out to see exactly how the alcohol would be served.
Wimer said a temporary charitable permit to serve beer has been granted to the business, allowing alcohol to be served during hockey games tonight and Saturday. He said a charitable organization will receive all proceeds from those sales. The idea, he said, is to allow members of the community to see how alcohol sales will work.
"I think that once the neighbors see how we do it, that it's just an edge to special events and the care we take -- I think they will have a certain comfort level."
Another invitation
Ross Scianna, owner of Antone's on Boardman-Canfield Road, is also asking potential voters to come out and visit the business before casting a vote. The restaurant, which is in the 27th precinct, is seeking a permit to sell beer, wine and mixed drinks.
Marie Cartwright, consultant to Antone's, said the company has sent a letter explaining what the business is requesting and asking voters for a yes vote. The company also enclosed a coupon for a free dinner for two.
"We felt it was very important to run an informational campaign telling the residents of the 27 precinct who Antone's is as a family and a business," she said.
