Volleyballteam wins
LORETTO, Pa. -- Junior Melanie Pounders had 12 kills, four digs and four blocks as the Youngstown State women's volleyball team defeated Saint Francis Tuesday at the Stokes Center.
The Penguins (9-13) won the first game 30-14, then went on to triumph 30-16 and 30-23.
Annie Buscher of YSU chipped in with 12 kills, five digs and two blocks, while Collen Royer had 13 digs and nine kills.
Nichole Hyer led the Red Flash (8-15) with 13 digs and four kills.

YOUNGSTOWN -- Tickets for Friday's Chaney High playoff football game at Whitehall-Yearling in Columbus are on sale until Friday at 11 a.m. at the high school and Mill Creek Deli. Tickets cost $5 for students and $6 for adults.

NORTH LIMA -- Tickets for South Range High School's football playoff game against Independence are on sale at the high school and middle school. Prices are $6 for adults and $5 for students. The game kicks off Friday at 7:30 p.m.

RAVENNA -- Southeast High School is selling tickets for its first playoff football game that will be against Cleveland Benedictine Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Bedford High stadium.
Tickets cost $6 for adults and $5 for students, and are available Thursday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the athletic office at the New Middle School and at the administration building.

Tennis Centerforming league
BOARDMAN -- The second Boardman Tennis Center winter adult league is forming. The league will run from mid-November through late January.
Matches will be played Saturdays at 5 p.m. and Sundays at 8 p.m.
Deadline is when 20 males and 20 females are accepted. Fee is $80 for non-club member and $70 for members.

Austintown runners qualify
EAST CANTON -- Austintown Middle School student Alexa Colello and Frank Ohl Middle School student Jason Anderson have qualified for Sunday's state championship meet for junior-high cross country runners.
They are eighth-grade members of the Austintown Junior High Cross Country Team and qualified at the district meet at East Canton High School. This is the first year for this event held by the Ohio Junior High Cross Country Coaches Association.
Colello ran a personal best of 14:07 in the two-mile event to place 15th.
Anderson ran a personal best of 12:29 to place 17th.
The top 22 runners from each of the 11 district races qualified for the state meet at Fort St. Clair Park in Eaton.
Sachire wins
WACO, Tex. -- Canfield resident Ryan Sachire was victorious in a first-round doubles match during the USTA Men's Challenger Mercedes-Benz International on Tuesday.
Sachire, a former Notre Dame standout, teamed with Tripp Phillips in beating. Ricardo Mello of Brazil and Ivan Miranda of Peru. After a 3-1 win, Mello-Miranda retired.

Marlins committo stadium
MIAMI -- The World Series champion Florida Marlins and Miami-Dade County announced a plan Tuesday night to fund $210 million toward a new ballpark that would open in 2007.
The 38,000-seat ballpark, which would have a retractable roof, is projected to cost $325 million, not including land for the new facility. The Marlins will commit $137 million and the county $73 million, which would come from convention development tax proceeds and professional sports franchise facility tax money.

NEW YORK -- Jim Duquette was hired as general manager of the New York Mets, four months after taking the job on an interim basis. Duquette had been running the team's baseball operations since Steve Phillips was fired in June.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Jacksonville linebacker T.J. Slaughter was cut, a day after he was arrested for allegedly pointing a gun at two men passing him in a car.
Slaughter, a fourth-year veteran, is free on bond while prosecutors decide whether to charge him.
He could face a felony charge of aggravated assault, or a misdemeanor charge of improper exhibition of a firearm.
