Stanford, Sizemore named to U.S. Olympic qualifying team
CLEVELAND (AP) -- Indians left-hander Jason Stanford and minor league outfielder Grady Sizemore were among the 24 players named Tuesday to the U.S. Baseball Olympic qualifying team.
Montreal Expos manager and Hall of Famer Frank Robinson will manage the squad that hopes to qualify for the Athens Games in 2004. The qualifying tournament starts Thursday in Panama City, Panama, and runs until Nov. 10.
Stanford, who has a chance to make the Indians' starting rotation next spring, went 1-3 with a 3.60 ERA in 13 games for Cleveland in 2003. The 26-year-old was 10-4 at Triple-A Buffalo.
If Stanford makes the Indians' roster next season, he would have to forfeit his spot on the Olympic team.
Sizemore batted .442 (19-for-43) with two triples, one home run and seven RBIs for the U.S. team during the Arizona Fall League. He compiled a .510 on-base percentage and .605 slugging percentage.
Sizemore, 21, spent most of last season at Double-A Akron and is expected to start next season at Buffalo.
He was acquired by the Indians in 2002 from Montreal along with second baseman Brandon Phillips and left-hander Cliff Lee in the deal that sent Bartolo Colon to the Expos.
