Man charged in Florida murder faces extradition despite fight
MERCER, Pa. -- A former Wheatland man will be returned to Florida to face murder charges.
Charles R. Sarchet, 48, who now lives in Brookville, Fla., is accused of shooting a neighbor to death in the Hernando County community July 27 in a dispute over money.
Hermitage police said he fled in the victim's car and drove to Mercer County, where he was arrested July 31 at the Starlite Inn on Pa. Route 18 shortly after they learned he was in the area.
Sarchet fought extradition to Florida, but Judge Michael Wherry of Mercer County Common Pleas Court ordered him in a brief hearing Tuesday to be returned to Florida.
Wherry said both the Mercer County district attorney and public defender offices stipulated that the paperwork was in order for Florida authorities to take Sarchet and he signed the extradition order.
Sarchet has 30 days to appeal that decision.
Sarchet is accused of fatally shooting Stuart Arlhuna, a man he occasionally worked for.
The victim's body wasn't found until two days after the slaying.
