BALDWIN WALLACE COLLEGE, Berea
Dominic Roberts of Austintown has been inducted into the Dayton C. Miller Honor Society. Students in the society must have a grade point average of 3.7 or higher over 76 semester hours.
THE COLLEGE OF WOOSTER
Senior biology major Jennifer Dlwgosh presented the results of a senior independent study project, "Screening for Mutant Clones of Creatine Kinase," at the Ohio Academy of Science. She is a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Youngstown.
Senior theatre major Katie Hammond received the Campus Council Leadership Award for seniors who have shown consistent dedication to student leadership positions. The Canfield High School graduate now lives in Grand Rapids, Mich.
CENTRE COLLEGE, Danville, Ky.
Mick Wigal, a 2000 graduate of Columbiana High School, was featured on the college Web site as an outstanding student. The junior economics and anthropology/sociology major plays third base for the college baseball team, is a member of a fraternity and an economic society and spent a term studying in Vietnam.
YOUNGSTOWN STATE UNIVERSITY
Several students were recognized at a recent geography department awards dinner. They are: Tom Lodge of Youngstown, Outstanding Geography Major; Lisa Bell of Cortland and Julie Harris of Niles, Outstanding Geography Paper Awards; Tim Nash of Warren, Geography Faculty Recognition Award.
JoAnn Knapic Academic Achievement Awards were presented to: Lodge, Beth Bosley of Negley, Nicole Danish of New Middletown, Julie Merlo of Austintown, Marta Poluse of Youngstown and Jamie Webber of Columbiana.
Biology major Jessica Conkle of East Palestine has been named an All-American Collegiate Scholar by the United States Achievement Academy. She has a 3.9 grade point average and was nominated by Dr. Ronald Shaklee. She is the daughter of Jim and Linda Conkle.
Michele Lee Boerio-Lorubbio of Struthers has been inducted into the nonprofit Golden Key International Honour Society.
She also is an inductee of the Omicron Delta Kappa Honors Society and earned a 2003 Arts & amp; Sciences Dean Quest Award for research and a departmental scholarship award. She is one of eight students admitted in 2003 into a Masters of Public Health program supported by surrounding colleges.
MOUNT UNION COLLEGE, Alliance
Freshman Dara Plate of New Waterford participated in the Women's Chorus at the college. Her major is undecided.
Several local residents have been named members of the college's Sophomore Service Honorary based on scholarship, leadership and service.
They are: Elizabeth Bonanno of Canfield, a Canfield High School graduate; Elizabeth Cavalier of Poland, a Poland Seminary High School graduate; Kristy Croysdale of Youngstown, an Austintown Fitch High School graduate; John Burkey of Salem, a Salem High School graduate; Dara Plate of East Liverpool, a Crestview High School graduate; Anthony Jones of Youngstown, a graduate of the Rayen School; and Ashleigh Lawerence of Struthers, a Cardinal Mooney High School graduate.
Senior psychology major Karla Devlin of Youngstown; senior early childhood education major Katie MacDonald of Canfield; and senior middle childhood education major Melissa Lott of Cortland have been inducted into the college's chapter of the Psi Kappa Omega academic honor society. Students admitted are juniors and nongraduating seniors with grade point averages of 3.8 or higher.
Devlin and Lott are also among several local students who received awards during the college's Honors Convocation. Lott received the Ethel Mellinger Award in Elementary Education; Devlin received the Kitzmiller Psychology Prize. Other honorees were middle childhood education major Rebecca Hovanec of Canfield, who received the Laurie Kolenbrander Public Service Award; and business administration major Michelle Marchand of Niles, who received the Dean Taylot Leadership Prize.
UNIVERSITY OF SCRANTON, Pennsylvania
S. Pearl Brilmyer of Cortland was one of 162 students inducted into the university's Richard H. Passon Chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta, a national honor society for freshmen who have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher and are in the top 20 percent of the class.
OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY
Junior Benjamin Jay Sinsheimer of Canfield was one of 18 students initiated into Eta Kappa Nu, the honor society for electrical engineers. Selection of juniors and seniors is based upon academics, character and a desire to strive for improvement.
A 2001 Graduate of Canfield High School, Sinsheimer also is on the Formula Lightning racing team out of the Center for Automotive Research at OSU. The team developed the Buckeye Bullet electric land speed record vehicle, the world's fastest student-built electric race car. He is the son of Robert and Mariellen Sinsheimer of Canfield.
