COMBINED DISPATCHES
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Winston Cup driver Jerry Nadeau, who suffered head, lung, rib and shoulder injuries in a wreck during practice May 2 at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway, has returned to North Carolina.
Nadeau was discharged Monday from Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in Richmond, where he has remained since the accident, and transferred to the Charlotte Institute of Rehabilitation.
Nadeau's rehabilitation will consist of physical, recreational, occupational and speech therapy.
"We are thankful and very appreciative for the excellent medical care that Jerry received at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center," Nadeau's wife, Jada, said in a statement released Tuesday. "It is a facility of the highest standard and everyone affiliated with the hospital was compassionate, professional and truly wonderful to work with.
"I join Jerry and all of the Nadeau family in extending a sincere thank you to the fans and everyone in the racing community for the heartwarming support that we have received.
"Your thoughts and prayers are being answered and it is so difficult to put into words how much this has meant to the family."
Nadeau, 32, suffered a moderate to severe head injury from the accident and remained in a semi-conscious state until he began communicating verbally last week.
Knaus fined
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Crew chief Chad Knaus was fined $2,500 by NASCAR Tuesday for a rules violation before qualifying for the Coca-Cola 600.
Knaus, boss of Jimmie Johnson's Chevrolet, was fined for using an unapproved refrigerant near the fuel system. The team never made a qualifying attempt because the motor broke before Johnson went onto the track.
So they changed the engine and Johnson started last in Sunday's race. He went on to win it when NASCAR called it because of rain after 414 miles.
