2003 Caine Prize nominees announced
LONDON (AP) -- Judges of the Caine Prize for African Writing announced five nominees for the award -- writers from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Congo and Kenya.
The $15,000 Caine Prize, awarded annually for African creative writing, is bestowed for a short story published in English. An African writer is taken to mean a writer born anywhere on the African continent whose work reflects that cultural background.
On the 2003 short list are Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor of Kenya, for "Weight of Whispers"; Ken Barris of South Africa, for "Clubfoot"; Emmanuel Dongala of Congo, for "Ouagadougou"; Rachelle Greeff of South Africa, for "Tell Him It Is Never Too Late"; and George Makana Clark of Zimbabwe, for "A is for Ancestors."
"It was a strong entry this year," Abdulrazak Gurnah, head of the judging panel, said Tuesday. "There are superb stories among the contenders on the short-list, any one of which would be a worthy winner."
The winner will be announced July 14, during a celebratory dinner at the Bodleian Library in Oxford.
