43 teams to participatein cancer fund-raiser
LIBERTY -- The Liberty Relay for Life will be from 6 p.m. Friday to 6 p.m. Saturday at the high school stadium. Forty-three teams are signed up for the 24-hour event.
A luminary ceremony is set for 9:15 p.m. Friday honoring those who lost their battle with cancer, followed by a fireworks show.
Saturday will feature bands, food, children's games, pony rides, storytelling and frozen-chicken bowling.
Last year's event raised $90,000 for the American Cancer society.
Girard talent show
GIRARD -- The high school will have its annual talent show from 7 to 10:30 p.m. Friday in the school auditorium.
The show will include singing, dancing, comedy and martial arts, with prizes to winners.
Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens.
Police investigatingthefts from vehicles
NILES -- Police are investigating a rash of vehicle break-ins, most of them in the northwest section of the city.
Reports show that between Monday and Tuesday at least 12 vehicles were entered, primarily on Cherry, West and Frederick streets, but also on Vienna, Washington and Lafayette avenues.
Money, stereo equipment and other items were reported stolen.
Stolen credit card used
NILES -- A Sharon, Pa., woman told police someone used one of her department store credit cards to buy more than $600 in merchandise.
The Saunders Avenue woman reported her purse was stolen Monday in the Hermitage, Pa., area and her Dillard's card was used Monday afternoon in that store in Eastwood Mall.
Reports were unclear if any other cards were used in the Niles area.
Vietnam memorial display
SALEM -- The traveling replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., will arrive in Salem on Thursday and be on display at Waterworth Memorial Park Friday through June 5.
The memorial is inscribed with the names of some 58,000 Americans who were killed or listed as missing during the Vietnam War.
The replica wall will be located near the band shell in the park. The best access to the area is from Sunset Boulevard off North Lincoln Avenue (state Route 45).
American Indian gathering
NORTH LIMA -- The Beaver Township Park Board will present an American Indian gathering Saturday at Woodworth Park on Warren Avenue.
The event will feature the Soaring Hawk Village and Cultural Society and will include dancing and demonstrations.
Various vendors will be selling wares, and food will be available.
Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free.
Teen held in assault
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 16-year-old girl accused of attacking three female workers at the Mahoning County Children Services group home on Glenwood Avenue was taken to the juvenile justice center Tuesday evening to face assault charges.
The workers said they were punched, slapped and kicked.
Police said the girl lunged at officers when they handcuffed her.
Charged in food theft
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police say Eugene L. Harris stuffed a pepperoni stick inside his pants in Sav-A-Lot Tuesday night and tried to leave the South Avenue store without paying.
Harris, 37, of Rowland Street, was arrested on a theft charge and served with an old warrant for failure to appear in municipal court on a theft charge.
When arrested, Harris told police: "I've been through this before. Just take me to the county jail. I have not eaten or taken a shower for days. This will give me a break."
School demolition set
LOWELLVILLE -- Demolition of the old village school building is to begin June 1.
Most of the salvageable architectural items have been removed and a fence to seal the demolition site will be erected this week, said Richard J. Buchenic, superintendent.
Boilers and science labs from the building were sold to the Hubbard school system, and some office furnishings were sold to the village for city offices and the police department. Students were given the opportunity to buy their desk for $1.
A new building for kindergarten through 12th grade opened earlier this year.
