SkillsUSA-VICA winners
CANFIELD -- Three Mahoning County Career & amp; Technical Center students received silver medals at the 2003 Ohio SkillsUSA-VICA state championships.
Senior Tom Fiscus of Struthers earned his award in the precision machining contest. Janice Mszanski, a junior from Campbell, won in the graphics communications contest. Chad Weaver, a senior from Marlington, placed in the automotive service technician competition.
Four-Way Speech Contest
BOARDMAN -- Rotarians recently recognized the winner and finalist of the high school District 6650 Four-Way Speech Contest, asking young people to consider truth, fairness, goodwill and what is beneficial to all.
They are Jarid Faubel, first place, representing Canfield Rotary; Sheena Dohar, second place, representing Boardman Rotary; Angelo Beil, third place, representing Youngstown Rotary; and Bradford Francis, fourth place, representing Howland Rotary.
Spirit of Community Award
HUBBARD -- Hubbard High School senior Katherine Ann Sebastiano has won a 2003 Prudential Spirit of Community Award. She is a daughter of Patrick and Marian Sebastiano. Katherine was honored for creating "Sharing Smiles," a program that promotes relationships between senior citizens and students. The award is sponsored by the Prudential Insurance Co. and National Association of Secondary School Principals.

Heart presentation
NEWTON FALLS -- Pupils at Newton Falls Junior High recently had the chance to learn about the human heart by viewing the real thing. Dr. Larry Woods, a cardiologist and chairperson/director of internal medicine at St. Elizabeth Health Center's Heart & amp; Vascular Center, conducted a cadaver heart presentation.
Allowing pupils to handle both healthy and diseased cadaver hearts, Dr. Woods illustrated how the organ functions and how disease can impair normal function.
Helping Liberty schools
LIBERTY -- Liberty Educational Endowment Fund, a local nonprofit educational support group, has now donated $100,000 to the school district since 1979. Patty Lettera, endowment president and grants chairwoman, said the group recently gave the district $5,500. Grants fund activities and materials that are not normally provided by the district. SPECIAL PROGRAMS
Film, digital video courses
CLEVELAND -- Cleveland State University's Department of Communication and Independent Pictures is accepting applications for apprenticeship-style training courses in film and digital video production. Programs are open to students 16 and older
Deadline is June 11. The three-week film program has a 15-student limit. The July and August digital video program has a 10-student limit. Grants are funded by the CSU President's Initiative. Applications are available at www.ohiofilms.com.
Summer Music Festival
MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Allegheny College offers various programs for adults, educators and students during its second annual Summer Music Festival, June 14 to 22 on campus.
An apprentice program, courses for teachers, adult musicians and high school and college musicians, a mini-music camp for children in grades two through six and a preschool program will be offered.

New OEA president
YOUNGSTOWN -- Michael Finney, a professor of English at Youngstown State University, has been elected president of the YSU chapter of the Ohio Education Association, which represents the university's faculty. His two-year term begins Aug. 1.
The officers of the union's executive committee are James Schramer, first vice president, professor of English; Ray Beiersdorfer, second vice president, professor in the Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences; Kathylynn Feld, treasurer, professor and director of YSU's Medical Assisting Technology Program; and Howard Mettee, secretary, professor of chemistry.

AKRON -- The University of Akron hosts an Adult Learner and Transfer Student Expo from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the student union, ballroom B, on campus. Those attending can talk with admissions specialists, academic advisers and obtain information on scholarships and financial aid.

Triumphant Spirit Award
The Jewish Community Relations Council has named Boardman Center Middle School teacher Jesse McClain as this year's recipient of its Triumphant Spirit Award, given in recognition of inspirational and significant contributions to Holocaust awareness and education in our regional community. The award will be presented at a dessert reception in honor of McClain at 7 p.m. Monday at the Boardman Performing Arts Center in Boardman High School.'
