NATIONAL LEAGUE Josh Fogg sharp, as Pirates triumph

Pittsburgh pounded Chicago after starter Kerry Wood exited.
CHICAGO (AP) -- Josh Fogg had just come off the disabled list and hadn't recorded a victory in nearly two months.
All of that didn't matter much once when he took the mound Monday against the Chicago Cubs.
Fogg shut down the Cubs over seven innings, outpitching Kerry Wood as the Pirates won 10-0.
Fogg (2-2), activated Monday, held the Cubs to three hits and didn't allow a runner past second base. He struck out five and walked three in seven innings.
"I threw a lot of off-speed pitches trying to keep them off balance," Fogg said. "To get one against a guy like [Wood] is a big thing."
Fogg also drew a walk in the Pirates' nine-run eighth inning.
"I never, ever thought he was going to be as sharp as he was coming back off that layoff," Pirates manager Lloyd McClendon said.
No relief
Wood (4-3) gave up just one hit and one run in seven innings, striking out 10. But he was lifted after throwing 113 pitches and it all fell apart for the Cubs.
Wood was occasionally wild and it hurt him. He walked four, hit a batter and threw two wild pitches. The Pirates scored their only run off him on a wild pitch.
Phil Norton, Juan Cruz and Antonio Alfonseca combined to give up six hits, four walks and a hit batter in the eighth. The nine runs were the most scored by the Pirates in an inning since June 12, 2001.
Julian Tavarez pitched two innings to finish the five-hitter, Pittsburgh's second shutout of the season. The Cubs have been blanked four times.
Jeff Reboulet and pinch-hitter Randall Simon hit two-run singles in the eighth, and Cubs pitchers walked in three runs.
Aramis Ramirez had an RBI single, and Brian Giles drove in two runs with a bases-loaded walk and an RBI single that capped the outburst.
Kenny Lofton, who singled and scored twice during the rally, extended his hitting streak to 24 games -- longest in the NL this season.
