Blewitt winstwo titles
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Senior Adriane Blewitt won a pair of gold medals and had a runner-up finish, helping Ashland University to a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Division II outdoor track and field championships.
Blewitt completed her career with seven national championships and six runner-up citations.
She won the shot put (57 feet, 61/2 inches) for the second year in a row, and the discus (181-1), both in meet record distances.
Blewitt won four consecutive national championships in the shot put -- she also won indoor crowns in 2002-03.
She also won the discus for the second time, matching her achievement in 2001. She was runner-up last year.
Blewitt was second in the hammer throw (205-1) behind only teammate Jackie Jeschelnig (207-5).
CORRECTION
Monday's column by Tom Williams said Walsh Jesuit was one of the regional softball teams in the Akron regional. The Associated Press reported on Sunday that Walsh defeated Mantua Crestwood in the district final, but the Ohio High School Athletic Association says Crestwood won, 2-1, and will play Marlington on Thursday. The Poland High softball teamplays Ashtabula Edgewood on Wednesday.
Slippery Rockloses in tourney
MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Down 6-0 after five innings, Grand Valley State scored a run in the sixth, six in the seventh and two in the eighth, then held on for a 9-8 win over Slippery Rock in an elimination game at the NCAA Division II baseball championship.
Slippery Rock (48-13) scored twice in the ninth on Brandon Stewart's two-run, two-out double.
Stewart (three RBIs) and Nathan Statzer each had three hits for Slippery Rock. Joe Neidrick added two hits.
But the bottom four in the Rock order were a combined 1-for-15.

Ohio Statein tournament
COLUMBUS -- Ohio State drew a third seed and will open the NCAA baseball tournament at the Auburn regional against second-seeded Clemson Friday at 3:30 p.m.
Auburn and Princeton are the other two teams in the regional.
The Buckeyes (41-19) beat Minnesota twice Sunday to win their second straight Big Ten Tournament and earn the automatic berth to the NCAA tournament.
Florida State is the overall No. 1 seed in the tournament. The other national seeds are Louisiana State (40-19-1), Georgia Tech (44-16), Auburn (40-19), Rice (48-10), Stanford (41-15), Cal State Fullerton (43-13) and Miami (39-14-1).
The winners of the 16 four-team, double-elimination regionals will advance to the super regionals, played June 6-9.
Aeros win 6-1
AKRON -- Kyle Denney pitched six shutout innings Monday as the Akron Aeros beat the Reading Phillies 6-1 in the Eastern League.
Denney (6-1) allowed five hits, struck out six and walked two.

Hinske out
TORONTO -- Toronto third baseman Eric Hinske will undergo surgery on his right hand and is expected to miss four-to-six weeks.
Last year's AL rookie of the year was placed on the 15-day disabled list. He will have surgery on the broken hamate bone on Wednesday.
UCLA winssoftball title
OKLAHOMA CITY -- Keira Goerl threw a no-hitter and Toria Auelua drove in the game's only run with a single in the ninth inning, giving UCLA a 1-0 victory over California in the title game of the NCAA softball championship Monday.
UCLA (54-7) won its ninth championship and first since 1999. The Bruins, after losing 7-3 to Cal in the first round, became the first team since Texas A & amp;M in 1983 to win the title after losing their opening game.
