Many Mahoning Valley communities held Memorial Day observances. Firing a rifle salute during the Memorial Day ceremony Monday at Boardman Park, above, are Larry Johnson, left, and his brother Ron Johnson, right. Ron's son Dan is in the middle. All three are Civil War re-enactors from Boardman with the 60th North Carolina Infantry. At left, Bryan Lincoln, 11, gets flag-handling instructions from Scoutmaster William Ellis before the start of Youngstown's Memorial Day parade. They're members of Boy Scout Troop 33 of Youngstown. The Valley residents joined other Americans across the country in honoring their war dead Monday, even as others celebrated the return of U.S. troops from the war in Iraq and paid tribute to those still serving abroad.
