Hot rod show ends with no big arrests

CANFIELD -- Police say they were busy with the Hot Rod Super Nationals at the Canfield Fairgrounds this weekend but made only a handful of motor vehicle-related arrests.
The most serious arrest made by the police over the weekend had nothing to do with the car show. Leroy A. Stanley, 23, of Austintown was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, driving under the influence, driving under suspension, violating the open container law, and passing a red light after police stopped him coming back from Berlin Center at 12:21 a.m. Saturday. Police said they found a loaded .45-caliber semiautomatic handgun in Stanley's car.
Police charged two people stopped on Fairground Boulevard with driving under suspension. Also, a 33-year-old Niles man was charged Friday with driving under suspension after he hit an 8-year-old boy who ran into the road on Lisbon Street. The boy suffered minor injuries.
A 25-year-old East Palestine man was charged with driving under suspension and improper passing on East Main Street on Friday.
The Super Nationals have been held at the fairgrounds since 1987. Last year, there were 51,353 spectators and 2,153 participants in the event. Attendance totals were not available this morning from the event's promoter.
