COLUMBIANA CORNER Downsizing in education; golf benefit seeking sponsors
Jean Metzger's third-, fourth- and fifth-grade gifted pupils at East Palestine have been meeting at the middle school-high school building for two years because of construction at the elementary school.
Recently, Metzger and her pupils were leaving as high school students flooded the halls to change classes. One high school teacher watched Metzger's students weave through the hall and noted, "The freshmen get shorter every year."
Golf benefit
Christiana House domestic abuse shelter is seeking sponsors for the third annual benefit golf outing to be held July 12 at Eagle Pass Golf Course in New Garden.
Columbiana Buick-Olds-Cadillac is sponsoring the hole-in-one contest.
Supporters may sponsor the event through tee or hole sponsorship, providing prizes and volunteering to work the event, said Beth Schmitt, Christiana House director.
Christiana House is part of Catholic Charities regional agency.
Prizes for the top three teams are $320, $240 and $180, respectively, she said. Co-chairmen Jeff Morrow of Salem and Leetonia Police Chief John Soldano said they are hoping for a full field of participants.
Cost is $40 per golfer or $160 per team, and includes 18 holes of golf with a cart and a meal.
