YOUNGSTOWN -- Alexander Hernandez, 5, of Magnolia Avenue died at 12:29 a.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Health Center from injuries he suffered in a traffic accident at 5:45 p.m. Sunday, according to the Mahoning County Coroner's office. Alexander and seven other children were passengers in a van that crashed at Wirt Street and Catalina Avenue. Witnesses told police that the van, traveling west on Catalina, failed to stop for a stop sign and collided with a car traveling south on Wirt. The other occupants were treated for injuries.
Fatal traffic crash
AUSTINTOWN -- A 22-year-old South Turner Road man died near his home when he lost control of his car and it crashed into two trees, a tree stump, a newspaper box and a post and flipped onto its side. Police said Dow W. Davis II was southbound on South Turner Road, just north of Fire Station No. 4, about 3:12 a.m. Sunday when the 1992 Saturn went off the right side of the road. Davis, who police said didn't appear to be wearing his seat belt, was not ejected from the car. The Mahoning County Coroner's office pronounced him dead at the scene with a preliminary cause being fatal chest and abdomen injuries. There appears to have been no alcohol involvement in this accident, and police are still investigating.
Accidental shooting
POLAND -- A 53-year-old Diana Drive man is recovering in St. Elizabeth Health Center after accidentally shooting himself in the leg early today at his home, police said. The man heard a noise outside his home, grabbed his gun to investigate but found nothing, police said. When he went back into the house, he sat down to put the gun away and shot himself. Police said there was no indication of a break-in or foul play.
Garage fire in Youngstown
YOUNGSTOWN -- Charcoal inside a trash can is listed as the cause of a garage fire at 420 Almyra Ave. at 2:25 a.m. today. Firefighters found the remains of the can inside the garage door. The occupant told them that she took the trash out at 5:30 p.m. Monday and the charcoal was wet at that time. The fire caused about $800 damage, reports show.
Porch set on fire
YOUNGSTOWN -- A fire was deliberately set Sunday afternoon on the porch at 2777 Mount Vernon Ave. and caused $15,000 damage to the two-story frame house, the fire department said. A neighbor called 911. The occupants arrived home after the fire was extinguished.
Local pupil on TVfor MATHCOUNTS
YOUNGSTOWN -- Jonathan Proch of Canfield, a seventh-grader at Montessori School of the Mahoning Valley, will make a national television appearance this week on ESPN. Proch competed in the national MATHCOUNTS competition in Chicago, which will be broadcast at noon Thursday on ESPN. Proch went to the competition after winning at the local MATHCOUNTS event at Youngstown State University and at a statewide competition in Columbus. Proch competed nationally on a team with three other pupils from Ohio. The team placed 16th. He is the son of Jeffery Proch, a 1978 graduate of YSU's electrical engineering program, and Margaret Martinko Proch, a 1977 civil engineering graduate at YSU.
YSU seminars available
YOUNGSTOWN -- War and terrorism, Islam, Russia and China are among the topics that will be covered in seminars this summer by Youngstown State University's Creative Retirement Opportunities that Work program. Session dates are June 4, war and terrorism; July 2, Russia and China in the global landscape; and Aug. 14, Islam history, art, architecture and religion. Lecturers include YSU faculty and members of relevant community and government groups. Each seminar runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Kilcawley Center on the YSU campus.
