Pirates shufflepitching rotation
PITTSBURGH -- Kip Wells will miss his scheduled start today for the Pittsburgh Pirates. His replacement will be named later.
Wells, bothered by a blister on his pitching hand, was told Saturday that he won't start until next weekend in St. Louis. But manager Lloyd McClendon said he honestly didn't know who would take his place.
Right-hander Josh Fogg will return to the rotation Monday against the Cubs in Wrigley Field, but it didn't appear likely that the Pirates would move him up a day to start today. Fogg last pitched Wednesday in a rehabilitation start for Triple-A Nashville, where he pitched twice after a strained oblique muscle healed.
Julian Tavarez (0-2, 7.04) is a possibility to pitch -- he was among a half-dozen competing for a spot in the rotation during spring training -- but he hasn't pitched that well out of the bullpen.
The Pirates could bring up a pitcher from the minors or wait to see which relievers weren't needed Saturday night against the Cardinals, then giving one a spot start.
McClendon said he wouldn't take a chance with Wells (1-2, 3.30 ERA), who has been the Pirates' most dependable starter. Wells' next start has been pushed back to Saturday.
The Pirates also sent minor league infielder Kody Kirkland to the Detroit Tigers to complete the Nov. 25 trade for first baseman Randall Simon. Kirkland hit .306 with 18 RBIs last season with Bradenton of the Gulf Coast Rookie League.

Martinezout for Yanks
BOSTON -- Pedro Martinez is not expected to pitch for another week, Red Sox team doctor Bill Morgan said Saturday after the Boston ace experienced slight discomfort in his right side while playing catch.
Although the pain was "nothing extreme," Morgan said, Martinez will not throw from a mound until he can throw without trouble and report back pain-free the next day.
That would push Martinez's next start into early June.
Tim Wakefield will move up a day to pitch against the Yankees on Monday.
Martinez, a three-time Cy Young award winner, is 4-2 with a 2.83 ERA.
Georgia beats Dallas
DALLAS -- Tyronne Jones caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from Leon Murray with 37 seconds left to lift the Georgia Force to a 49-45 victory over the Dallas Desperados in the wild-card game of the Arena Football League playoffs Saturday.
Murray was 26-of-41 for 246 yards and five touchdowns, and Jarrick Hillery caught nine passes for 102 yards and three TDs for 12th-seeded Georgia, which will play top-seeded San Jose next Saturday.
Jim Kubiak was 24-of-37 for 230 yards and six TDs for fifth-seeded Dallas.

AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands -- Craig Nall became the first player in NFL Europe this season to throw for 300 yards as the Scottish Claymore eased past the Amsterdam Admirals 31-20.
Nall, property of the Green Bay Packers, also hit for three touchdowns. He completed all three of his passes on an opening 89-yard drive, connecting with Mike Malan of the New England Patriots on a 34-yard touchdown pass.
The Claymores took a 14-0 lead on a 74-yard drive capped by Ken Simonton (Buffalo Bills), who ran in from the 1. And they scored when Malan caught a 3-yard TD pass for a 21-3 lead.
In the fourth quarter, Nall finished his big day by hitting tight end Rodney Trafford (Patriots) for a 5-yard score.
Nall threw for 313 yards. Later in the game, Amsterdam quarterback Shawn Hill joined Nall in the 300 club by also throwing for 313 yards.
Scotland (4-4) remained in the race for a World Bowl berth, but Amsterdam (3-5) needs much help to get back into contention.
