CHICAGO -- Gary Knotts outpitched Esteban Loaiza as the Detroit Tigers shut down the Chicago White Sox 1-0 Saturday night for their third straight win.
Knotts pitched 72/3 scoreless innings and Franklyn German completed the combined three-hitter. The Tigers have held the White Sox to a total of seven hits in two days.
Brandon Inge tripled to lead off the third and scored on Omar Infante's sacrifice fly for the only run. The White Sox lost for the sixth time in eight games. Knotts (2-3) retired 18 of the first 21 batters he faced. He gave up two hits, struck out a career-high six and walked two.
Knotts began the seventh inning by hitting Carlos Lee in the left side of his helmet, forcing the White Sox outfielder to leave the game because of a headache.
In the eighth, Knotts walked Joe Borchard leading off the inning and threw a wild pitch. After Joe Crede flied out and pinch-hitter Frank Thomas struck out, German relieved.
German closed for his first save.
Loaiza (7-2), trying to tie Toronto's Cory Lidle for the major league lead in victories, didn't get any help from the White Sox offense for his second straight start.
Loaiza got only two runs of support last Sunday against Minnesota and wound up with a no-decision.
