PREP SOFTBALL Jackson-Milton victorious in district final

CORTLAND -- The Jackson-Milton High softball team added to the fun that began Friday in the Division IV district championship game at Lakeview High.
Leading 6-1 in the sixth inning Friday when rain and lightning postponed play, the Bluejays didn't let up Saturday, scoring three more runs for a 9-1 win over East Canton.
Jackson-Milton clinched its first district championship since 1999 and will play Crestline in a regional semifinal Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at Kent State University.
Seniors Jayne Fenton and Corey Velk led the Bluejays with three hits each.
Velk, also the pitcher, held East Canton (7-13) to one run on four hits while improving her record -- and the team's -- to 21-6.
In the first inning Friday, Jackson-Milton scored two runs against East Canton starter Ashlee Mundy -- on RBI singles by senior Lynsey Kosa and Velk -- and didn't let up.
Fenton made it 3-1 in the third when she scored on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded.
The Bluejays jumped ahead 6-1 in the fifth, which was highlighted by junior Rhea Weimer's two-run triple that chased Mundy from the game. Freshman Lindsey Johns added an RBI single.
Junior Shannon McGee had just started to bat in the bottom of the sixth Friday when play was stopped because of the weather.
