LOCAL TENNIS Ursuline duo earn top seed at state



Donald Person and Brian Meek defeated Beachwood and Central Catholic.
MASSILLON -- The Ursuline High doubles team of Donald Person and Brian Meek earned a No. 1 seed in next week's Division II state tennis tournament at Ohio State University.
Ursuline qualified for the state meet on Thursday at the Jackson Community Courts and played for state seeding Saturday.
In their first match Saturday, the Irish beat Michael Aronson and Jeremy Stein of Beachwood 6-4, 7-5 and then defeated Chris Jones and Kyle Jones of Canton Central Catholic 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4).
University School's Sammy Sidhu and Gui Schils earned the third seed by defeating Beachwood in the consolation match.
In the singles competition, William Ellison of University School gained the top seed by defeating Porus Jetli, also of University School, 6-3, 4-6, 6-0.
Division I
ROCKY RIVER -- The Howland High doubles team of Ryan Trapp and Jason Trapp defeated two teams from Wooster to earn a No. 1 seed at next week's state meet.
At the NEO district, the Tigers defeated Wooster's Bart Schenck and A.J. Wilson 6-2, 6-2 before stopping Wooster's Andrew Hodges and Josh Senger 6-2, 6-0 in the title match.
It marks the first district championship for a Trapp family doubles team. Jason is a senior and Ryan, a junior.
Ryan and Kevin Trapp fell short of a district crown two years ago, although the brothers reached the state tournament that season.
Schenck and Wilson earned the third seed for state by defeating Perry's Kosta Elefter and Henry Elefter 6-2, 6-3. Teams from Avon Lake and Hudson also won state berths.
Canfield's Kevin Kuppler and Matt Waigand just missed qualifying for state after losing to Avon Lake's Ian Wagner and Kyle Kovacs 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.
In the singles competition, Canfield's Chris Kuppler won the state's fifth seed by defeating Alex Justinlani of Strongsville 6-3, 6-3 before stopping Cleveland St. Ignatius' Matt Chirlcosta 7-5, 6-4.
Chardon's David Rozek won the No. 1 seed by defeating Cleveland St. Ignatius' Dominic Ozanne 6-1, 6-4.
Jordan Buehler of Wooster and James Daly of Akron Firestone also won state berths.
Boardman's Tom Barth missed out on a state berth by losing to Chirlcosta 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
