Trails Day planned
The Allegheny National Forest will host a National Trails Day trail improvement project Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the North Country National Scenic Trail near Red Bridge Recreation Area.
Those wanting to camp the night before are invited to camp along the trail or call the National Reservation Service at (877) 666-677 to reserve a site at Red Bridge.
The work project will involve digging into the uphill side of the treadway, reducing the slope and widening the hiking surface. Additional work will include light brushing of the trail, adding trail markers and restoration of a footbridge.
Volunteers are asked to meet at the Red Bridge Bank Fishing area, on state Route 321 north of Kane at 8 a.m. Saturday. They should wear sturdy boots, and bring gloves and a lunch. Please contact Eric Flood at the Bradford Ranger District (814) 362-4613, for more information.
For those who want to celebrate National Trails Day in a more relaxed fashion, the Boot Jack Snow Gliders and the ANF will co-sponsor a hike at the Little Drummer Historical Pathway Saturday at 9 a.m.
Little Drummer has interpretive stops along a 1.3 mile-hike that tell the story of forest and wildlife habitats. Those interested in a hike longer than 1.3 miles may continue on a 2-mile, self-guided hike. Wear rubber-bottomed boots, bring binoculars for wildlife viewing, and liquid refreshments for an enjoyable hike expected to last about 2 hours.
