YOUNGSTOWN Woman receives award for impact on YSU



YOUNGSTOWN -- Jeanne Tyler of Girard, who has a long career of volunteering to organizations across the Mahoning Valley, received the 2003 Friend of the University award from Youngstown State University on Friday at a dinner at the Butler Institute of American Art.
Tyler is the seventh recipient of the award, which was started in 1997 to recognize alumni, friends and donors who have made a significant impact on YSU.
The Friend of the University recipient is selected through a process that includes representatives from the YSU Board of Trustees as well as the Office of University Development. Each honoree gets a crystal penguin on a black marble base.
Past honorees are Dr. Ernest Perry, Warren P. Williamson III, Eleanor Beecher Flad, Clarence R. Smith Jr., Emily P. Mackall and William W. and William J. Bresnahan.
Other affiliations
Tyler, a native of Lakewood who moved to Youngstown in 1949, is a trustee for Paisley House and Stambaugh Auditorium. She is a member and past president of Forum Health's Women's Board, a member and past president of the Mahoning Valley Historical Society and a member of the Ruth Beecher Foundation Board. She was a member and past president of the board of Planned Parenthood, and she was a member and past president of the Visiting Nurses Association board.
Tyler, who has a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Michigan, also has been active in the American Red Cross, the United Way, the Hine Foundation and Junior League.
Among her honors: 2002 Trustee of the Year Award from the Western Reserve Care System; the Kathryn Challis Pollock Award from Planned Parenthood; and the 1999 YWCA Woman of Valor award. She also received the key to Youngstown from Mayor George McKelvey in 2000 for her work with the Mahoning Valley Historical Society.
