Two calendars, two Taylors, two winners
LIBERTY -- Taylor Wamsley didn't think she'd win.
"I had no idea," the 9-year-old fourth-grader said after applause from her fellow pupils at E.J. Blott Elementary School.
Taylor's fire-prevention poster is one of 12 selected statewide to appear in the Ohio State Fire Marshal's Fire Safety Calendar for 2003-04 now being distributed.
"Have a meeting place," her poster reads. The art work shows a burning house, with the family gathering outside.
"I wanted to do something different," Taylor said, explaining that most of her classmates were using the theme: "Stop, drop and roll," the technique used to get below the smoke in a burning structure.
Taylor isn't the only Trumbull County pupil to be honored.
Taylor Baumiller, 7, a second-grader at Hartford Elementary School, also had her poster chosen.
"If you have smoke in your house, get down and crawl," is the message she chose to convey.
Tim Royer, fire marshal's fire safety educator, said it is unusual for two winning pupils to have the same first name. Royer said the pupils were selected among hundreds of entries statewide.
Jennifer Johnson, Blott art teacher, said Liberty schools had 550 entries. Two were selected by the township fire department to compete in the state competition.
This was the first year Liberty entered the competition, said Liberty Fire Chief Michael Durkin.
