TENNIS Ursuline's Person, Meek headed to state tourney

MASSILLON -- Ursuline High's Donald Person and Brian Meek qualified for next week's Division II state tennis tournament by winning both of their doubles matches Thursday in the district tournament at Jackson Community Courts.
They will play two matches Saturday to determine seeding at the state tournament.
In the first match, Person and Meek defeated Chagrin Falls' Kevin Conosolo and Ben Isaacson, 6-2, 6-3. The Irish then defeated University School's Toby AuWerter and Trevor Zakov, 6-0, 6-1.
Mooney's doubles team of Chris Conese and Mike Kerrigan lost to Central Catholic's Chris Jones and Kyle Jones, 6-1, 6-0, in a first round match. Poland's Luke Duchek and Jonathan Funk also lost in the first round, falling to Orange's Eric Bram and Douglas Goodman, 6-2, 6-4.
Singles
Liberty's Richard Baroff won his first match, then lost in the second round to end his tournament run. Baroff, the sectional champion, defeated Central Catholic's Devin Vrabel, 6-0, 6-0. He then lost to Joe Smetona of University School, 6-3, 6-1.
Baroff's teammate, Sam Ballas, lost his first round match to St. Thomas Aquinas' Mark Lundgren, 6-0, 6-1.
Ursuline's Kelton Person, Donald's younger brother, lost his first round match to Canton Central Catholic's Alex Campanelli, 6-0, 5-7, 6-2.
West Branch's Tom Page fell to Canton Central Catholic's Lanny Rubin in the first round, 6-1, 6-0.
