SYMPTOMS
"Baby blues": Crying, irritability and confusion.
Postpartum depression: Classic signes are continuation of the crying; sleeping problems; loss of appetite; hopeless thoughts about the future; thoughts of suicide. The loss of energy and sleep deprivation that accompanies having and caring for a new baby alone make it hard to function.
Risk factors for postpartum depression include: First baby; history of depression and postpartum problems; colicky baby; unplanned or unwanted pregnancy; Caesarean section (many women feel robbed if they don't give birth vaginally); single mothers without someone to share feelings; feelings of isolation.
