An arbitrator ruled in July 2001 that Chief Bruce Simeone was not allowed to assign detective duties to a supervisor but instead should have followed past practice of giving the assignment to a patrolman.
In his ruling, Judge Logan wrote the chief of a police department has a "basic fundamental right ... to operate his department and assign his officers therein."
