Boardman Park's commissioners name pavilion for longtime official

BOARDMAN -- Commissioners of the Boardman Township Park District have named a newly constructed open-air picnic pavilion that will open this summer in honor of Thomas C. Masters, who was a park commissioner for 23 years.
On Friday, they also set all-day rental rates for that pavilion at $90 for township residents and $150 for nonresidents. It can seat 150 people and is near Boardman Park's Southern Boulevard entrance.
Daniel N. Slagle Jr., park executive director, announced that the Memorial for the Veterans of Boardman Township, adjacent to the park's Maag Outdoor Arts Theatre, will be dedicated at 10:45 a.m. Monday, immediately after the 10 a.m. Memorial Day parade.
The 7-foot-high stone monument is topped by an eagle and surrounded by two stone benches and three flagpoles. The inscription on the monument reads: "Dedicated in honor of the veterans of Boardman Township who served in the armed forces of the United States of America. Their sacrifice defines the character of this great nation."
Slagle also announced that restoration of the fire-damaged 1828-vintage St. James Meeting House near the park's U.S. Route 224 entrance is "99.9 percent complete.'' The building's steeple was struck by lightning last August.
