Ceramic implants used
YOUNGSTOWN -- Dr. Michael Miladore, orthopedic surgeon for Forum Health, has begun using an FDA-approved Trident Ceramic Acetabular System, or ceramic implant, for hip replacement surgeries in younger, more active patients. The new implant is intended to last 20 years or more. Dr. Miladore said the ceramic-on-ceramic implants last longer than standard metal-on-plastic implants because the ceramic ball does not wear out the ceramic cup as quickly as the metal on plastic does. Also, it is believed that the ceramic attracts synovial fluid, the natural lubricating fluid of joints, which forms a protective barrier around the implant, also making it last long.
Drug warnings work
COLUMBUS -- Statewide efforts to warn youths and parents about the dangers of the illicit drug GHB appear to be working, according to the latest Ohio Substance Abuse Monitoring Network released by the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services.
GHB, or gamma hydroxybutyrate, is a central nervous system depressant that young people have used to produce euphoria and heightened sensations. But, according to ODADAS director Luceille Fleming, GHB can kill the first time. Also, GHB, also known on the street as "G," "Liquid X," "Scoop," "Georgia Home Boy," and "Grevous Bodily Harm," has been pegged as the facilitator in a number of sexual assaults, some deaths and near-fatal emergencies, Fleming said.
