YOUNGSTOWN -- Raids at three homes by the vice squad resulted in the arrest of four men Thursday on drug and gun charges.
At 49 E. Auburndale Ave., Cameron Wells, 20, of Parkview Avenue was arrested on charges of possession of cocaine and mishandling a firearm in a motor vehicle. Christopher Chew, 25, of West Warren Avenue was charged with possession of marijuana.
At 70 E. Florida Ave., Randy L. Bell, 18, of East Philadelphia Avenue was arrested on charges of trafficking in cocaine and trafficking in marijuana. Police seized from the fireplace mantle 23 packaged-for-sale bags of crack cocaine and 13 packaged-for-sale bags of marijuana.
At 284 Dupont St., Maurice Franklin, 22, of Lauderdale Avenue was arrested on charges of aggravated trafficking in crack cocaine, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Ryan's bill would helpfamilies of reservists
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan has introduced a bill to ensure families of reservists and National Guard personnel called to active duty have health insurance coverage.
Ryan, of Niles, D-17th, said guardsmen and reservists can lose their employer health insurance when they are called up for active duty.
Under Ryan's proposal, the families would have the option to continue their private health insurance coverage during the period of active duty.
The same bill was introduced in March in the Senate by Sen. Edward Kennedy.
YSU gets $234,624 grant
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State University has received a $234,624 grant from the U.S. Department of Education's Upward Bound program.
The program for high school and college students is to build and strengthen skills by blending classroom learning with nontraditional educational opportunities such as cultural enrichment and outdoor experiences.
Kent State and the University of Akron also got funds for the program.
Chaney student heldin fires at school
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 15-year-old Chaney High School student, already on probation in juvenile court, set two fires at the school Thursday, first in a locker, then a girl's hair, police said.
The West Warren Avenue boy was arrested on charges of arson and aggravated arson Thursday and taken to the juvenile justice center.
Aside from some hair missing, the girl is OK.
Home construction loans
COLUMBUS -- The Ohio Housing Finance Agency has approved just over $3 million in loans to Youngstown Choice Homes VI for construction of 40, four-bedroom, single-family homes for low and moderate income families. Each home will include a fully-equipped kitchen, one and a half bathrooms, garage, basement and energy-efficient windows and furnaces. The developers of this $5.4 million project are NRP Holdings and Choice Inc., both of Youngstown.
DUI arrest
YOUNGSTOWN -- Michael I. Campy slipped in and out of consciousness when police opened his car door at 1:40 a.m. today on Gibson Street and asked what he was doing, reports show. Campy, 31, of Gary Avenue, Girard, was arrested on charges of DUI, driving under suspension and possession of drug paraphernalia (crack pipe). Police said they found Campy slumped over the wheel, asleep and smelling of alcohol. Because of his condition, he was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where police placed a hold on him.
Student arrested
POLAND -- Township police have arrested a 16-year-old Poland Seminary High School student and charged the boy with misdemeanor carrying a concealed weapon after he was found to have a knife in school. Police reports say a substitute teacher confiscated the knife earlier this month after the boy tried to conceal it in a book. School officials initially handled the situation "in house" not releasing information to police until 11 days after the incident. Police have not said why the boy may have had the knife in school.
Meeting schedule modified
McDONALD -- Village council will have a modified meeting schedule for the summer months.
Meetings are set for 7 p.m. June 25, July 23 and Aug. 13.
The regular schedule of meeting on the first and third Wednesdays of the month will resume in September.
