PA. STATE PARKS | Activities planned
Several nature programs, as well as demonstrations and tours, will be conducted during the Memorial Day weekend at McConnell's Mill and Moraine state parks, near Portersville, Pa., southeast of New Castle.
McCONNELL'S MILL
Corn grinding demonstrations: Two half-hour demonstrations will begin at 1 and 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Old Mill. Participants will learn how a miller used power generated by Slippery Rock Creek to ground corn into cornmeal.
Historic Grist Mill tours: Two 45-minute tours, beginning at 2 and 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Old Mill, will take people through the history of how grain was transformed into flour.
MORAINE STATE PARK
"Become a S.M.A.R.T. Angler:" This program will be from 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at the park office on the South Shore. A naturalist will teach children about aquatic animals, the importance of clean water, outdoor safety and various fishing techniques. Adult supervision is required.
"Tell Tale Tracks:" A naturalist will conduct this two-hour program, beginning at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Five Points area on the North Shore. Participants will learn how tracking can be used to identify animals' sex, age and size, as well as determine when the track was made. People are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes and comfortable clothing.
