K.O. DRUGS Fetty-Kinkead bout feeds crowd's frenzy

Super lightweight Dan Ramun of Poland is 13-0 all-time in the tournament.
HUBBARD -- A crowd of more than 500 was on hand for the semifinals of the 16th K.O. Drugs High School Boxing Tournament Wednesday night at the Hubbard High gymnasium. Twenty-three of the 29 bouts went the distance.
In the finale of the night, Josh Fetty from West Middlesex, a 225-pounder, pulled off a mild upset in a super heavyweight upperclass battle with a much taller and heavier Kiff Kinkead (280) from Champion. Fetty was the aggressor, forcing the fight for three rounds with non-stop punching to win the decision.
Kept throwing
Fetty, a junior fullback and defensive tackle, said, "I just kept on punching, even when I got tired I didn't stop."
There were several other hotly-contested upperclass fights. In a battle of undefeated middleweights, Chris Pankewicz of Canfield gained a decision over Scott Lenhart from Champion.
Pankewicz said, "I felt stronger, especially in the last round and that was my advantage tonight."
Boardman junior middleweight Kiez Smith went to 3-0, stopping previously undefeated Brandon Holmes from Champion when the second round ended, in a bout that had both fighters slugging it out.
In an upperclass middleweight fight, Hubbard's Larry Starr decisioned Dwayne Pompey of Woodrow Wilson. Pompey forced the action from the opening bell and landed a series of straight rights. But Starr did a good job of fighting off the ropes and counterpunching to land the decision.
Super lightweight Dan Ramun (3-0) from Poland stopped Chayce Behnke from Niles when the second round ended. Ramun, a junior, is 13-0 all-time in the K.O. Drugs event.
Button wins
The only fight of the night involving females was an underclass junior welterweight bout that saw Joanna Button from Boardman out-slug Melissa Collinsworth from Canfield to get a decision.
In the underclass, two light-heavyweight fighters from Canfield, Dustin Flick and Chuck DeColla, battled, with Flick earning a decision.
Austintown Fitch welterweight Dave Castronova went to 3-0 with a decision over Nick Hartshorn of Keystone.
Struthers fighters Tom Peluso (junior welterweight) and Mike Duponty (cruiserweight) earned wins.
