SALEM -- The Minerva High girls and Mogadore Field boys lead the Division II District track and field meet at Salem following Wednesday's competition.
Rae Ann Kocher of Minerva took first place in the shot put with a toss of 38 feet, 21/2 inches, as the Lions took the lead with 161/2 points.
Erica Wilson of The Rayen School, a senior, cleared 5-2 to win the high jump.
"I am happy I made it back to the regional next week, but I can do better than what I did today," said Wilson.
She wants to better the school record (5-5) set at the Poland Invitational and to also qualify again for the regional when she competes Friday in the long jump. Her best effort this season has been 17-111/2.
Ursuline relays
Ursuline's Jessica Kausits, Cierra Bennett, Tiffany Walsh and Tiffani Miller came to the district wanting to qualify for the regional in both the 4x800 and 4x400 relays.
They accomplished their first goal, as they took second in the 4x800 in 9 minutes, 58.5 seconds. St. Thomas Aquinas was first in 9:56.97.
Miller was challenged in the final 200 meters and said, "I was pushed down the stretch and fought it off."
Aubree Horning of Salem, a junior, placed second in the shot put with a school-record throw of 36-9. She tied the old mark (36-4) at the Columbiana County meet. The record toss came on her second throw in the finals.
"I had thrown better at practices, but at meets when I got off a good throw, I fouled," said Horning.
Boys competition
Matt Dunn of Field won the long jump (19-91/2) as the Falcons scored 15 points.
Shane Harding, Bill Borrelli, Lance Murphy and Jarrod Neiderhiser of Salem placed second in the boys 4x800 relay (8:25.35). Waterloo was first in 8:23.4.
"We knew we had the talent to get out of district and make regional," said Neiderhiser.
Dave Sedlacko of Struthers took first place in the discus (146-2).
The meet resumes Friday with finals scheduled for 4:30 p.m. The top four in each event qualify for the regional at Ravenna next week.
