DISTRICT SOFTBALL Ursuline completes comeback
The Irish will face Painesville Harvey for a regional berth.
ORWELL -- Maureen Cearfoss struck out five and walked one as Ursuline High rallied with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to defeat Garrettsville Garfield 4-3 in a Division III district softball semifinal Wednesday at Grand Valley Middle School.
Ursuline took a 1-0 lead in the second, but Garfield responded with three runs in the top of the fourth.
With one out in the bottom of the fourth, Staci Ziobert singled, Vannessa Dickson hit an RBI triple and Ashley Siembieda followed with an RBI single and advanced to third on a throwing error. One out later, Mariah Snyder singled in Siembieda with the go-ahead run.
Siembieda had two hits for the Irish (19-10), who play Painesville Harvey in today's district final.
Tia Knepper and Becky Custer doubled for Garfield (13-10).
Painesville Harvey 3, Newton Falls 0
ORWELL -- Lindsey McCartney tossed a three-hitter, striking out eight and walking three, but it wasn't enough for Newton Falls (19-9).
Ashley Shaver had two hits for the Tigers.
St. Vincent-St. Mary 4, South Range 3
BEAVER TWP. -- In a Div. III district semifinal at Green Beaver complex, South Range lost a late lead.
Amy Algeo hit a two-run home run to give the Raiders (13-8) at 3-2 lead, but St. Vincent-St. Mary (12-9) scored two runs in the top of the seventh. Jessica Spickler hit a triple for the Raiders.
